Day 11: Mbalele Mbalele – Planting the Seeds of the Future
In May 2024, Santa Catarina Pre-School became the scene of an exciting educational transformation. For three days, teachers Olinda and Beatriz, accompanied by Project Manager Carlos and Specialist Marieta, took part in enriching training as part of the Mbalele-Mbalele Project, a partnership between Um Pequeno Gesto and the FEC organisation. This project’s mission is to improve the first years of children’s lives, a fundamental period for moulding bright futures.
Training that transforms
The focus of the training was on the 5 domains of integrated care for the early years: early learning, health, nutrition, appropriate care, safety and security. Each of these pillars was covered in detail, showing how they can be applied to create a cosy, safe and stimulating learning environment.
The trainers emphasised the importance of the relationship between adult and child as the basis for emotional development, self-esteem and confidence. It is through positive interactions that children feel safe to explore, ask questions and grow.
The Mirror as a Tool for Discovery
One of the most striking moments of the training was the presentation of a simple but powerful resource: the mirror. This element, introduced into the classroom, invites children to observe themselves, discovering their body and their image. More than an object, the mirror becomes a portal for building identity, allowing each child to recognise their unique value.
A Community United for Child Development
This joint effort involved not only educators, but also local authorities responsible for social services and gender, reinforcing the idea that caring for children is a shared responsibility. The Mbalele-Mbalele Project not only equips teachers with practical tools, but also inspires communities to prioritise child well-being.
The Future Starts Here
The Mbalele-Mbalele Project is much more than training. It is a movement that celebrates the infinite possibilities of the first years of life, ensuring that every child has the right to a start full of love, security and opportunities.
And so, with little gestures and big steps, we continue to build better futures, one smile and one mirror at a time.
