Day 15: The first Community Sports Days
A date marked by joy and unity – the first Community Sports Days. Early on, the children from the communities and the Growing Up with UPG programme gathered for a special event: Sports Days. The sun was shining brightly, but the children’s enthusiasm and smiles overshadowed any tiredness.
Right at the start, Mano Carlos, the project manager, addressed the children. With words full of enthusiasm, he explained that the day was a celebration, a time to socialise and have fun. The days were not about competition, but about creating bonds, exploring talents and, above all, having fun. ‘Next year,’ he said, ’we’ll have more days. Get ready to create unforgettable memories like today.’
The start of the competitions
The starting whistle blew, and men’s football took centre stage. On one side, the communities of Banhine, Mission and Nhancutse. On the other, the children of Crescer com UPG. The game was exciting, with dribbling and passing that drew applause from everyone present. In the end, the communities won 3-1. Despite the defeat, the smiles didn’t disappear – it was the magic of team spirit.
As the smell of hot breakfast bread wafted through the air, the children replenished their energy before the next event: the sack race. The field became a stage for laughter and funny tumbles. The Crescer girls showed their agility and won both races, but the children from the communities kept the competitive spirit alive.
The Rhythm of the Day
After the race, it was time for the jump rope, an even contest that ended in a draw. But the most exciting moment was the improvised speed race, which had just two competitors. With their hearts beating faster than their steps, the communities won. To finalise the sports, the traditional Neca delighted the audience, with Crescer winning another point.
Poetry and Dance
The afternoon brought a moment of introspection and art. In the study room, the children prepared to recite poetry. Well-chosen words and emotion in their voices led the EFI team to victory. Soon afterwards, the room was transformed into a dance hall with the marrabenta competition, the most vibrant of the day. The infectious sound carried the audience along to the rhythm of tradition, with the ESC team winning over the audience and the title of winners.
When the competitions ended, the music continued to play. The children, now under no pressure, danced freely, creating a spontaneous spectacle that made everyone smile.
The Closing
At the end of the day, everyone gathered to hear the words of thanks. Brother Carlos, with a smile of mission accomplished, praised the commitment and joy of each child. ‘You made this day special,’ he said.
The children unanimously thanked him. ‘We want more days like this!’ they said. And so, between hugs and promises, the Sports Days came to an end, but they left an unforgettable mark on the hearts of everyone present.
It was a day that began as a simple sporting activity, but turned into a celebration of unity, joy and shared dreams!
