Christmas Calendar 2024: Day 21

In April, during Mana Sara’s visit, the sandy paths took her to Banhine and later to the families of Chongoene. Despite the effort, time never seems to be enough to reach the most remote areas where ALG operates.

The journey to Banhine is an adventure that begins on the sandy beach, crosses tight tracks between bushes and ends on a path traced by the power of the pick-up truck. On arrival, the singing of mums echoes in the air in a warm welcome that fills the heart. The central building, an old church with no roof, becomes the meeting point, while the children look on with curiosity, shyness and hidden smiles.

Something has changed. The attentive gaze reveals young people who have overcome barriers: if before 7th grade seemed like an insurmountable limit, now there are teenagers in 10th, 11th and even 12th grade. Education is beginning to open doors and create new possibilities.

Conversations flow with older people, now full of dreams. Teacher, policeman, accountant, engineer – each answer, although timid, reflects the hope of those who are beginning to glimpse the future. For the girls, a special request: keep studying, resist difficulties and fleeting illusions. The message is clear and firm: school is the way, the future depends on it.

The farewell moments are marked by tight hugs and promises of dedication, until the mums burst into song and start dancing. The celebration involves everyone, and even visitors join in, sharing the contagious energy of a community that celebrates small victories.

In these remote communities, where the starting point is so challenging, every step taken is a victory. Little achievements become giants, lighting the way to a future where education continues to transform lives and nurture dreams.
