Escolinha Flor da Infância, Xai-Xai
Fernando Langa is 4 years old, he lives in Xai-Xai and since 2018 he has been attending the Escolinha Flôr de Infância (one of the three pre-schools financed by UPG). Fernando’s father passed in 2001, therefore, he only lives with his mother- Mum Atalia- who is affected by mental disorders and confronts several challenges to sustain a healthy and normal life with Fernando. Fernando’s home, which is fragile, without a kitchen, without a bathroom, was destroyed by the storm that passed by Xai-Xai in February 2019.
At Escolinha Flôr de Infância, Fernando has access to two meals per day, pre-school education, a safe space, and a happy environment. But to improve Fernando’s life outside of school, UPG is initiating a plan to construct a new home for Fernando and his mum (Atalia). Besides the help, for empowerment and self-sustainability, UPG proposed Mum Atalia an opportunity and she now works at the Escolinha with the cleaning services.

With an annual value of 32,000£, ALG pre-schools reduce children’s marginality, improve nutrition and hygiene habits and enhance primary education results.
