In 2020 ALG registered a pronounced increase in local hunger after a five-month State of Emergency and lockdown. One of the relief measures taken was the distribution of seeds for cultivation to 558 families in Manjangue, Chokwé, Chongoene and Xai-Xai.
Families presented some difficulties with domestic farming such as different types of land that revealed as inappropriate for certain seeds, mice and young goats that ate seeds and even lack of access to water. Despite these, most families successfully planted crops in their vegetable huts (“machambas”) or the plots adjacent to their homes.
